September 11, 2001. At 8:46 A.M the first commercial airliner,
an American Airlines Boeing 767 slammed into the North tower of the World Trade
Center. Eighteen minutes later, another Boeing 767 hit the south tower of the
World Trade Center. At 9:45 A.M American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the
West side of the Pentagon, the nation’s center of the military. United Airlines
flight 93 departed at 8:42 on a nonstop flight from Newark, New Jersey to San Francisco,
California. The plane was only filled halfway to capacity as the plane took off
for what would have been a routine flight. The pilots of the plane were informed
of the attacks at the World Trade Center 30 minutes into the flight. Just after
a warning had been given out to the pilots, the hijackers took over the flight.
The passengers made a series of calls on the flight informing family members of
their plans. The passengers and the crew members began to fight back the
terrorists when air traffic control overheard the hijackers say to crash the
plane. To this day nobody knows for certain the final destination of the plane
except that it was headed towards DC.
I just can't imagine what it must have been like on that flight. Some amazing bravery there.
